Friends-

I want to share something that has been near and dear to my heart for the past six years. This year, March brings the launch of the last mile in a campaign to build a permanent home for the Ballard Food Bank.

BFB is a resource that has never been more important in our community. Since Covid, we have seen the number of families in need nearly double and now serve over 6,000 households a month. The food delivery program surged from roughly 120 a week to over 900 – which is possible thanks to volunteers and a handful of critical partnerships. Weekend Food for Kids continues and includes 12 schools. Beyond nutritious food, BFB provides a resource hub and link to other key agencies for clients. BFB directly provides utility and rent assistance, which results in keeping people housed.

All of this is done with a small staff of passionate and capable people and a terrific group of volunteers. And it is done with humanity and kindness that recognizes the dignity in each person. That shows up in the careful detail of packing the specifically requested food items for delivery – even including a birthday greeting. It shows up in the connections that are built between the volunteers and clients, and each other, and in the patient care the staff consistently shows to all. The vibe at BFB is so positive!

Our journey for a permanent home started more than four years ago and got us to today: which is 88% of the way to our fundraising goal  of $13.9M and on track to open doors this Fall. We just need $2M more. Every dollar helps.

What can you do? So glad you asked…

-          Donate today (and help me in a friendly March Madness competition)

-          Join me for a volunteer shift and a good catch up to learn more. Several of you have and it’s been super fun.

-          Let me know if you have connections to organizations or other donors who can help.

-          Spread the word

Pat and I do plan to host some kind of celebration/support event this summer. (Please don’t wait for this) and also hope to see you then.

With appreciation,

Kathleen
