From our formative work with adolescents and young adults, we learned that they prefer to receive information from physicians and wish they had 30-45 minutes to talk with their physician during a routine visit. We hope to support adolescents who may not have access to transportation or parental support in taking charge of their health, including preventative care and treatment. By providing transportation for young people with financial need, they may be seen for free by our dedicated providers throughout Johns Hopkins GYN/OB and Adolescent Medicine.
To demonstrate the importance of these services, over the first quarter in 2021, clinicians in JHOC Women’s Health Clinic have provided compassionate care to the following patients:
A 12yo girl who had her first period in December 2020 and presented to our ED with a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. She did not understand reproduction, her anatomy, or how her sexual behavior led to her diagnosis and emergency surgery.
A 16yo girl who had sex for the first time and contracted genital herpes. This diagnosis increases her chances of HIV acquisition, which is a real risk in a high HIV burden city like Baltimore.
A 22yo young adult woman who has tested positive for gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, chlamydia, and genital herpes over the course of receiving care by our clinicians.
A 17yo girl who pocketed an entire basket of sanitary napkins after telling her to help herself.
