Special Olympics Vermont (SOVT) is part of a global movement using the power of sport to break down barriers and foster true inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities. Our mission is to ensure every athlete can develop physical fitness, confidence, and leadership skills and that Vermont communities grow stronger and more welcoming as a result.
In the past year, over 2,900 athletes trained and competed in 13 Olympic-style sports, supported by numerous coaches, unified partners, and event volunteers. SOVT hosted statewide Winter, Summer and Fall Games, a statewide swim competition and regional tournaments. SOVT also hosted free health screenings in four disciplines: Special Smiles (dentistry), Healthy Hearing (audiology), FUNfitness (physical therapy), and Health Promotion (nutrition and prevention). Increased partnerships with Unified Champion Schools, which includes Unified Sports, Inclusive Youth Leadership and Whole School Engagement, helped create inclusive school cultures.
The impact reaches far beyond competition. Athletes gain independence and friendships; families find community and support; and schools and towns across Vermont become places where people of all abilities are valued and included.
