Thank you for reading our story. You might remember our team from 2017, when we were a team of 7 teachers who went to Boston University, studying in the School of Education, together. We trained and fundraised for the 2017 NYC Marathon as Team BUnitedforaCure. After raising over $33,000 and completing the 26.2 mile run, we reunited in August 2018 to run the Falmouth Road Race as Team B(re)UnitedforaCure. Then, once again, we reunited reunited and expanded team BUnitedforaCure as we trained, fundraised for, and ran the 2019 Chicago marathon. Now, during the summer of 2020 amidst COVID-19, we are one again reuniting from a distance and we are running across the country!
So here is our story: While at BU, we were lucky to become friends with two amazing people, Kelly and Mike, who shortly after college got married and had a beautiful son, Danny. Unfortunately, a few months after Danny was born, Kelly began fighting the biggest fight of her life: breast cancer that spread to her brain. She underwent treatment after treatment, trial after trial, and yet she continued to smile all day every day, and to do everything she could in order to provide for Danny. She loved with all of her heart and she gave her everything to keep him learning, growing, and smiling.
Kelly passed away on April 26, 2017, but her warrior spirit continues to inspire anyone who had the blessing of meeting her. That is why, when we were given the opportunity to once again reunite and run Chicago together, it was an easy decision to transfer our entries to run for the American Cancer Society. Kelly is the reason we created our team, BUnited for a Cure, and the other warriors who have come into all of our lives are the reason that our team continues to expand as we work to fundraise to help treat, cure, and hopefully one day soon, end cancer.
Together we are running to honor and support the people in our lives and the lives of others who fight their battle with cancer, and we are running in memory of all of those who have lost their battle.Our team’s participation supports the American Cancer Society, the leader in the fight to end cancer. The donations our team raises will enable investments in groundbreaking cancer research and free information and services for people facing cancer. For more than a century, the American Cancer Society has led the way in the fight to end cancer – and we are excited to be part of their team.
