I came to the USA as a graduate school student 28 years ago from India. I built my life here working with temporary work visas followed by starting a small business at some point. When I chose to become a US citizen two months ago, my American friends were so thrilled about me getting the citizenship, showered me with thoughtful cards, gifts and a dinner party. Thanks to this welcoming land of Immigrants, I have always had a life of dignity and freedom here.
Every immigrant and refugee story does not have such soft landings. Most refugees are from countries ravaged by war and other calamities and they are displaced from their home land. Those who are able to complete the arduous and lengthy vetting process and get approved for travel, arrive in this country as strangers, still separated from their family many times, looking to rebuild their lives. They are allowed to work in this country. But how do you find a job? Where do you live on day one? How do you pay for the food and rent? How do you get better at spoken and written English to lead your life here?
Community Refugee and Immigrant Services (CRIS) helps refugees and immigrants rebuild their lives in Central Ohio by providing housing assistance, employment support, case management, English classes, youth mentoring, and legal services, among other programs. CRIS is non-partisan but faces increasing challenges as policy and position changes at the federal level could have severe consequences on CRIS’ programs and funding.
This is why I’m raising money to help refugees and immigrants in Central Ohio with CRIS. Your donation will help to continue the work and mission of CRIS: to help refugees and immigrants reach safety and stability, sustain self-sufficiency, and achieve successful integration into the Central Ohio community.
