Parker was diagnosed at birth with congenital cytomegalovirus (CCMV). CCMV is the most common infectious cause of birth defects and lead to numerous concerns for Parker, including hearing loss, liver problems and an inguinal hernia.
It wasn’t until he was placed with his foster mom at 2 years old that Parker was able to get caught up with all of his appointments with various departments at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
“A few days after receiving Parker, I got a call from the GI clinic regarding an important appointment that Parker needed to go to,” recalls Parker’s mom, Shelby. “It was at that appointment the doctor sat with me and explained all of Parker’s medical needs and his medical background.”
He had the hernia repaired, participated in a swallow study to help him eat and drink better, and after his hearing aids were determined to no longer be beneficial, he moved on to a cool blue cochlear implant. Soon after, his family and care team began to see vast improvements.
At 4 years old, Parker began therapy at Nationwide Children’s for mental health concerns. With the support of the behavioral health clinic, Parker is thriving.
“Parker has beaten so many odds and tackles every obstacle that is faced in front of him with grace,” shares Shelby who officially adopted him in 2023. “He is so proud of himself, as is his whole family. He is a real-life superhero.”
