Empower Women in Guatemala Through Sewing
Across Guatemala, many indigenous women complete sewing courses through local charities, but without access to their own sewing machines, their journey toward earning a living with their new skills often stalls.
That’s where GLP steps in. We partner with local organizations to gift new Brother or Singer sewing machines to program graduates, giving them the tools they need to turn their skills into sustainable livelihoods.
During graduation events, we visit former recipients who share the tremendous impact these sewing machines have had on their lives. They now create blouses, aprons, and bags of all sizes to sell at local markets, and some have even formed cooperatives to sell their products online!
Why a Sewing Machine Matters
- Enables women to earn income from home by creating and selling goods
- Increases income potential and fosters economic independence
- Empowers women by strengthening self-worth and confidence
- Allows mothers to build businesses while staying with their families
- Helps avoid the risks of emigration for work and the hardship of family separation
