COURSE DETAILS


The KONA Chocolate Run returns with our most picturesque and flattest course ever—a fan-favorite venue offering incredible views and a smooth race experience from start to finish.

You’ll kick things off on Central Avenue, surrounded by Detroit’s skyline and the iconic Belle Isle fountain. The course takes you:

  • Over the bridge to the Grand Prix pit lane
  • Past the south tip of the island with views of the Ambassador Bridge and Gordie Howe International Bridge
  • Along the Detroit River with the Windsor skyline in view
  • Around the majestic fountain, then past the Belle Isle Casino, historic clock tower, and Conservatory
  • Then, it’s a scenic return via picnic roads and a 600-meter straightaway to the finish

🏃 5K – One loop of the scenic course
🏃 10K – Two full loops
🏃 Double Up 15K – Three full loops
🧁 Kids 800m Sweet Fun Run – A coned-out and closed short route out-and-back on Central, cheered on by the full crowd!

Start & Finish Line

🏁 Location: All races start and finish on Central Avenue on Belle Isle, with the stunning Detroit skyline and GM Renaissance Center as your backdrop.

Race Surface & Path Details

  • Primary Surface: Fully paved asphalt roads—no grass or trail sections!
  • Flat Course: Ideal for PRs, new runners, and anyone looking for a smooth, scenic run.
  • Two-Way Sections: The course remains open to park traffic in some areas—stay alert and respectful of others.

Trail & Race Etiquette

Follow course markings: chalk, cones, and signage
✅ Keep right when possible; pass on the left
✅ Be courteous—this event is dog- and stroller-friendly
✅ Spectators are encouraged to cheer but not crowd key turns or aid stations


Road Crossings & Safety

Although the course avoids major roads, some driveways and bridges are crossed within Belle Isle.

⚠️ Race Day Reminders:

  • Always yield to official vehicles and follow volunteer instructions
  • Don’t assume vehicles will stop—pause and look before crossing
  • Be alert around bridges and tight turns

Aid Stations

💧 Stay refreshed! Aid stations are located approximately every mile and include:

  • Cold Water
  • Gatorade Endurance Formula
  • Supportive volunteers with chocolatey encouragement!
