Everyone can make a difference, as we learn from Susan Burgert. Susan was diagnosed with endometrial cancer in the spring of 2013 and turned to the Kelly Gynecologic Oncology Service for her care. As a Johns Hopkins physician herself, she already knew that patients were receiving world-class medical care, but she also knew from personal experience that more was needed. Susan wanted to help women like herself find their way through the challenges of their diagnosis and treatment. She began promoting awareness and raising funds for gynecologic cancer research and survivorship programs. She saw the importance of being present and meeting the needs of the whole woman: body, heart, and spirit. She was passionate about the idea that no woman would feel alone during her cancer journey. In the fall of 2013, over a delicious seafood dinner, she stated, “I want to start a race at Hopkins.” In the spring of 2016, after nearly three years of planning, her vision became a reality at the First Annual Below the Belt Stride and Thrive 5K/1-mile Run/ Walk at Goucher College in Towson, Maryland. In the spring of 2017, the event was once again held at Goucher College, with an increase in both the number of participants and funds raised. Susan passed away in December of 2017. Her presence has been deeply missed ever since. She would have been humbled by the tributes honoring her. Susan’s legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched and will continue to enhance through the supportive services of the Susan L. Burgert, M.D. Gynecologic Oncology Survivorship Program.
