2023 is a year of milestones for Jim “The Shark” Dreyer. This August 3rd will mark the 25th anniversary of his 1998 swim across Lake Michigan, which launched his career as a record-setting athlete. Then on August 16th, Jim turns 60 years of age.
To celebrate this significant anniversary and birthday, Jim Dreyer plans to raise the bar with another epic solo swim of Lake Michigan, scheduled to begin on August 1-3, 2023, depending on weather.
To this day, while others have tried, no one else has successfully swum the width of the lake between Wisconsin and Michigan, as Jim did in his historic 1998 crossing.
In 2023, Jim will attempt to make the second-ever solo mid-lake crossing of Lake Michigan … 25 years later, 25 years older, and an estimated 25 miles further.
This time, Jim plans to swim an 82.5-mile point-to-point route from Bradford Beach in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to City Beach in his new hometown of Grand Haven, Michigan, a.k.a. “Coast Guard City USA.” If successful, he will eclipse his previous Lake Michigan distance record.
Jim’s 1998 Two Rivers, Wisconsin to Ludington, Michigan route was a 50-mile point-to-point swim that ended up with him logging 65 miles due to strong cross-currents.
Lake Michigan – The Silver Sequel will be held during Grand Haven’s Coast Guard Festival and will benefit the Grand Haven Chapter and Western Lake Michigan (Milwaukee) Chapter of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Chief Petty Officers Association, which supports Lake Michigan Guardians, their families, and communities on both shores.
