Thank you for being a Captain for the Welcome Walk 2026! We can’t do it without your support! Here’s a guide to lead you and your team to success.

1. Ready, set, build!

New captains

Create your Team Fundraiser: Everyone will automically get an individual fundraiser page and as you register you will have the opportunity to create your team fundraiser on the donation step of the registration path.

If you miss that opportunity, you can create a Team Fundraiser after the fact: While logged into RunSignup, navigate to “My Profile” by clicking the round icon in the top right corner (if you uploaded a picture, it is that image). From there:

• Scroll down to the Fundraising section, and click “Edit Fundraiser.
• Scroll down to the “Team Fundraiser” section where you can create a team. 

2. Set a goal

Set an aggressive but achievable goal. The earlier you set a goal and get started, the more you and your team can achieve. We recommend starting with a team goal of $1,000  - if you can get three friends to join you, that’s only four people raising $250 each. 

3. Recruit!

Building a team is one of the most fun parts of the event. Walking together to show the world that you support LGBTQ+ asylum seeking immigrants? Priceless. Invite friends, family, co-workers, neighbors—anyone you know—who would be excited to support you or be involved in our mission. Team members can participate as a donor, walker, or runner!

4. Promote

Use email and social media to promote your team to your network. After personalizing your team’s page, share it on your social accounts and encourage your team to do the same. Connect your network of friends, family and co-workers and tell them why you’re leading a team and ask them to join you. Be sure to include the link to your page where they can register or donate directly.

5. Stay connected with your team

The most successful teams (who have the most fun) are ones that engage with each other before, during and after the walk. Keep the communication flowing using emails, or texts. Pick a spot on near the Ott Center to meet so you can come together before the event.
