Each year, the Howard County Autism Society's Every Step Counts Autism Walk & 5K Run brings together those touched by autism and members of the broader community in a supportive, energizing, fun environment. Join us! Together we are #AutismStrongMD
The Howard County Autism Society (HCAS) is excited to partner once again with the Autism Society of Baltimore-Chesapeake (ASBC) to bring the 2021 Every Step Counts Autism Walk & 5K Run to life. The collective goal is to raise $100,000 toward programs and services for the local autism community that is more than 7,000 strong! Be sure to designate the charity partner you’re supporting when you register or make a donation.
Along with many of you, HCAS is easing into a pre-COVID mindset. This year, we’re bringing back the timed 5K Run around Centennial Lake in Ellicott City, MD. There will be one start time for runners, followed by a start for participants in the 4K Walk around the lake or the 1K Stroll for those seeking a shorter distance. And those who can't join us at Centennial Park on October 2 may register to participate virtually, at a time and location of their choosing.
In addition to participating as a runner or walker, we invite participants to become fundraisers to help us reach our goal of $100,000. Here are some fundraising tips:
The Every Step Counts event village, with a few changes from previous years, will feature recognition of event sponsors and vendors, family-friendly entertainment by roving circus entertainers, artists, and costumed characters, and an assortment of individually-packaged refreshments. Event highlights at Centennial Park on October 2nd will be shared on social media to put participants and spectators, regardless of their location, in the center of the action as the event unfolds.
Leading up to the event, sponsors and community supporters will be recognized on the event website, on social media and in promotional materials. On-site at the event, sponsors and other supporters will be featured on signage and in event highlights posted to social media. Visit the Sponsor page to learn more.
We look forward to welcoming back our volunteers. This year, we're offering all of our traditional volunteer tasks associated with an in-person foot race. Sign-up is easy. Visit the Every Step Counts Volunteer page to select a task and sign up online. Or click HERE to download a Volunteer Application.
For 28 years, the Howard County Autism Society has served autistic individuals, their families, and community by providing information, support, and advocacy; promoting awareness of autism that values the dignity and uniqueness of each individual; and working to improve the quality of and access to services and to educational opportunities. Nationally the prevalence of autism is estimated at 1 in 54 births by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The overall rate in Maryland is about 1 in 52 – one of the highest in the country – and Howard County has the highest incidence of autism per capita in the state owing to the quality of its educational system, support services and accepting community.
Now more than ever, Every Step Counts. With your support, HCAS and ASBC can continue to provide critical services, raise awareness, acceptance, inclusion and educate the public about the complexities of autism. Thank you!
