Why I founded Asylum Pride House is actually quite simple. Over ten years of working with recently arrived immigrants in the US, I continuously saw a complete lack of programs and support services specifically for queer immigrants, especially people seeking asylum. Because recently arrived LGBTQIA+ individuals often do not have friends, family or the financial means to support themselves in this early time period, many individuals become unhoused and end up in exploitative - sometimes life threatening - situations. Being part of the LGBTQIA+ community myself, I knew I had to try and do something.
The idea was not to just put people in a house, but provide all the wrap around support needed to give people the best chance at thriving in their new communities. In September 2023, the idea of Asylum Pride House became a reality when we welcomed our first six residents into our West Philly home. Since then, Asylum Pride House has helped more than 80 people access secure housing, case management, legal assistance, and vital resources. Today we continue to be the only 501(c)3 organization with this holistic model of support exclusively serving the LGBTQIA+ immigrant community.
In this hostile political climate towards both the LGBTQIA+ and immigrant communities, Asylum Pride House's work is more important now than ever. Every week our team is contacted by new people needing support - people wrongfully in detention with no legal representation or guidance, people losing their jobs due to unjust changes in their immigration status, people staying couch to couch with no place to call home. Asylum Pride House's job is to be people's community, their support, and their home, and I'm honored that it's my job as well.
