The story behind founding Asylum Pride House is actually quite simple. Over a decade of working with recently arrived immigrants, I consistently saw a complete lack of services designed and focused specifically on LGBTQIA+ immigrants, especially those seeking asylum. Because recently arrived LGBTQIA+ individuals often do not have family, friends, or their own income to support themselves, too many people end up unhoused or in exploitative situations. Being part of the LGBTQIA+ community myself, I knew I had to do something.

In September 2023, this idea of Asylum Pride House became a reality when we welcomed our first six residents in our housing program in West Philly. Since then, Asylum Pride House has helped more than 80 people access secure housing, case management, legal assistance, and vital resources.

In this hostile political climate towards both the LGBTQIA+ and immigrant communities, Asylum Pride House's work is more important now than ever. We are fighting daily for our LGBTQIA+ immigrant community members' right to continue to seek safety in the US. Every day we receive more calls and emails for support - people losing their jobs due to removed immigration status, people in detention with no lawyer or guidance, people staying couch to couch with no place to really call home. Being the guidance, support, and home is Asylum Pride House's job and it's a job I'm so proud to call mine as well.
