At just 20 weeks of pregnancy, a routine checkup brought Melissa and Adam devastating news: their unborn son had spina bifida, a serious birth defect in which part of the spinal cord remains exposed. The diagnosis came with life-altering risks and overwhelming uncertainty. In the midst of their fear and heartbreak, they turned to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, a place that became their beacon of hope and expert care.

The complexity of spina bifida, often called the “snowflake condition,” meant that Brayden’s diagnosis was unique. With the guidance of the expert team at Johns Hopkins, Melissa and Adam faced the challenges head-on. They knew their son would likely need multiple surgeries, but they also knew he was in the best hands.

Brayden was born at 37 weeks, his first cries filling the room with a powerful reminder of his resilience. Though the road ahead was long, his parents knew he was already a fighter. He underwent multiple surgeries, including a delicate back closure and shunt placements. Even in the neonatal intensive care unit, Brayden showed incredible strength. He was breathing on his own just days after surgery!

Today, Brayden is an excitable little boy who rolls through life in a wheelchair with a smile on his face. While he still faces challenges, he has the best chance for a full life thanks to the care he received at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.
